City of Okra

The history of okra and how it established its stake as a staple in southern cuisine is one filled with heritage and cultural significance. It’s disputed origin is commonly agreed to be the West African, Ethiopian, and South Asian regions. Growing up in the deep rural south of The United States, our sweltering summer heat made for an ideal growing environment around the late 1700s/early 1800s. For my family’s household, it was commonplace to have okra grown and served on our property. The photo included was taken personality at a private farm in the county I was raised.
