For more than half the year the elk are very social. I like to keep some distance because they are calm unless they are annoyed or threatened so I typically stay around 30 feet/10 meters away. Fall is when apples and pears grow and the will walk though the neighborhoods and shake the trees until they get to eat all they want. They also eat other trees.
I have seen them walking up my driveway and also relaxing under a tree next door. They also enjoy laying and bathing in our parks and golf courses. I believe they had up higher in the mountains to mate.
They are so majestic that I cannot help but stop what I am doing to watch them. They are BIG! Not as big as a moose, but still very large. The ones here have grown up around people and cars so they do not mind when you drive by them.
