Harvest festival Celebration
In Sabah, Malaysia, every year in the month of May , my tribe the KadazanDusun, celebrates the 'Tadau Kaamatan which the Harvest Festival. This festival has been celebrated in Sabah since time in memorial. This is a beautiful celebration in thanksgiving to God for giving the land a good year harvest of our staple crop - the rice. It was believed that God had a beautiful daughter, named Huminodun, who sacrified herself for the good of her people. There was famine in the land and the people had no food to eat. They were dying and this princess saw it that she had to do something for her people and so she told God her father to allow herself to be sacrified as food for her people. She ask her father to allocated, to each part of her body to be transformed into food type that can be seeded and be cultivated by the people. And so, her head was to be coconuts, her teeth be grains of the earth and so forth. The people mourned her death, but in 7 days, she returned to the people in the form of the food sources that she had gift herself to be. and in spirit, she rule and guard the harvest therefore this festival in her honor. There will be gong beatings, traditional music, traditional sports, traditional wine competition, traditional food, traditional song competition, traditional dances, and the highlight of the celebration a beauty contest in search for a beautiful maiden that would best fit the beauty of Huminodun. By the way, 'Huminodun' must be of KadazanDusun blood. It is not any means of discrimination to other beautiful contenders of the contest but the tradition of a KadazanDusun princess cannot be compromise. For all who wish to witness this celebration, you are invited to come join the merry making of the festival every May of the year.
