Hiking is one of the most popular hobbies in Germany. About 68 percent of the German population are active hikers. There are around 200,000 km of marked hiking trails in Germany. One of the most popular hiking trails in Germany is the Goldsteig in Bavaria. With its 660 km, it is also the longest hiking trail in Germany and leads from Marktredwitz to Passau. Another very popular hiking trail is the Heidschnuckenweg in northern Germany. The path is 223 km long and leads from Hamburg to Celle, among other things, through the Lüneburg Heath. This path is also suitable for inexperienced hikers, because the highest point is the Wilseder Berg at only 169 meters.
