Funeral Ti leaf (Hawaii)

One thing people do in our Hawaiian culture is leave a bowl of salt water and a ti leaf outside your door before going to a funeral. When you come back home from the funeral, you dip the ti leaf in the bowl of salt water to sprinkle the water at the door step. The belief is that when you do this, it’s to keep bad spirits away from your home that you might bring or have from attending the funeral. This applies when you go just to pay respects and if you decide to stay. As long as you go, do this for “mana pono” or for good spirits internally and loose spirits that haven’t left for heaven.
