March 1st, Roman tradition
Every 1st of March we have a specific Romanian tradition called Mărţişor (pronounce [murr-tsee-shore] - Romanian pronunciation: [mərt͡siˈʃor]). The name means "little March" and it suggests celebrating the coming of Spring. People buy flowers (mostly spring flowers like snowdrops) and talismans for their loved ones, mostly for women, as they are the ones celebrated on this day, along with the spring, in modern days. The talismans come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, but they all have an unique characteristic: a red and white string symbolizing death and life, light and dark, warm and cold. In the past, the strings were black and white. This tradition is also celebrated in Moldova.
