Perahara (Kandy)

The "Perahara" is a grand and colorful religious procession that takes place annually in Sri Lanka to honor the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha, which is enshrined at the Sri Dalada Maligawa temple in Kandy. The festival usually takes place over 10 days in the months of July or August, and it is one of the most important cultural events in Sri Lanka. The highlight of the Perahara is a procession of elephants, adorned with brightly colored costumes, lights, and ornaments. These elephants carry the sacred tooth relic in a golden casket on their backs, and they are accompanied by dancers, drummers, fire-eaters, whip-crackers, and other traditional performers. The procession winds its way through the streets of Kandy, with thousands of spectators lining the route to witness the spectacle. The atmosphere is electrifying, with the sounds of drums and other instruments reverberating through the air, and the colorful costumes and decorations creating a stunning visual display. The Perahara is not just a religious festival; it is also a celebration of Sri Lankan culture and heritage. Visitors from all over the world come to experience this unique event and to soak up the atmosphere of this vibrant and colorful country.
