On November 17th the Day of fight for freedom and democracy is celebrated in the Czech republic. On this date in 1989 a protest against the communist government happened. Many students were beaten up by the police but it was a starting moment for the Velvet revolution that ended up in Czechoslovakia becoming a democratic a free country. Many people (including me) still celebrate this event almost 35 years after and see it as an important moment in our history. Every year people gather up in Národní třída, the street where the protest took place, and take part in the celebration. At the end of the day, a song Modlitba pro Martu is sang all over Prague. This song by Marta Kubišová became a symbol of the fight against the communist regime and the events that happened on 21st August 1968. If you are interested, I can tell you more about it.
