Canberra, Capital of Australia

Although the area had been inhabited for more than 25,000 years by the First Peoples of Australia, it was in 1913 that Canberra was founded and in 1927 that it became the national capital of Australia. It was designed as the capital because neither of the two largest Australian cities wanted the other to be the capital, so it is situated between the two (although parliament met in Melbourne from 1901 to 1927 and Canberra is closer to Sydney than it is to Melbourne). Photos are of Old Parliament House (opened 1927), New Parliament House (opened 1988) and a view of Capital Hill where the New Parliament House is situated.
