First footing, Scottish tradition

First footing is one of Hogmanays (New Years) traditions that happens over here in Scotland. A first footer is the first person to step foot in your house after midnight on New Years Day, and is it said that, that person will bring your house good luck for the year ahead! That’s why you will often see neighbours going over to others houses at midnight on New Years with gifts like Shortbread, Whiskey and sometimes Steak Pie. Back in the day though people would bring stuff like Coal and Firewood for the fire, but open fires are rare to come across nowadays, so that’s why it’s no longer what people bring.
