Mayday celebrations

Mayday is celebrated in Finland as a celebration of the workforce, working class. It also celebrates the coming of summer. It is especially a celebration for students nowadays. Many do get drunk, but it also has traditions like speeches, special cuisine (potato salad and sausages), picnics, helium balloons and mayday fairs and singing. At a certain time of the day people gather to a spot in their city, listen to a speach and then put their graduation hats on to wear for the rest of the day.
