Merlion, A mythical creature

The Merlion is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. It was designed as a symbol to represent Singapore’s origin as a fishing village when it was called Temasek, which means "sea town" in Old Javanese. The lion head represents Singapore's original name, Singapura, which means "Lion City" in Malay.The Merlion statue stands at Merlion Park, overlooking Marina Bay, and it has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Singapore. The statue is 8.6 meters tall and spouts water from its mouth into the bay. The park offers a great view of the Marina Bay Sands, another iconic structure in Singapore.There are actually several Merlion statues around Singapore, but the one at Marina Bay is the most famous. The Merlion is a beloved symbol for locals and a must-see for tourists, embodying the rich history and vibrant future of Singapore.
