What you call a bread roll tells you where you're from
The word you use to denote a humble bread roll... from which you might make an English egg and cress sandwich, a workman's 'bacon buttie' or even a cheeky takeaway 'chip stottie'... reveals which part of the UK you come from. If you're from London you might call it a 'breakfast roll' but if you're from Manchester it might be a 'Barm' or 'Bam' (both pronounced baaarm), whilst those in the North East of England would often say 'Stottie'. This is on top of the 'North/South' variations in how you call the three meals of a day - be it breakfast/lunch/dinner (South), breakfast/lunch/supper (South South), breakfast/dinner/tea (North) or 'intermittent fasting window' if you are influencer on TikTok.
