Festa Junina

Festa Junina is an event that lasts the entire month of June, and it also extends to the month of July, becoming Festa Julina. It is one of my favorite events of the year, every weekend there’s a party somewhere. Everything is very colorful, with little triangular flags decorating the place, there’s so many people and so much happiness and fun all around. The events usually have bands playing forró, or similar genres, everyone is always dancing, even if they’re not the best dancers. There are a lot of specific foods, made out of corn and nuts, like for example pamonha, curau, both are made of corn. There’s lots of cake as well. But my favorite is Quentão, it’s a hot drink made of wine, cinnamon, ginger and where I live we put pieces of apple in it. It’s so good. Festa Junina started as a religious event, because of São João, but nowadays it’s just something we celebrate. To most people it’s just a party. During Festa Juninas, we also have quadrilhas. It’s a choreographed dance that a lot of people participate. It’s very beautiful to see. I wish everyone could participate in a Festa Junina at least once in their lives.
