LWL-Freilichtmuseum Detmold

The LWL-Freilichtmuseum Detmold, or the Detmold Open-Air Museum, is one of Germany’s largest and most extensive open-air museums. Located in Detmold, North Rhine-Westphalia, it spans around 90 hectares and showcases over 100 historical buildings from across Westphalia. The museum offers a detailed view of rural life from the 16th to the 20th centuries, featuring authentic farmhouses, mills, workshops, and barns. Each building is furnished to reflect the everyday life and culture of the time period it represents, with exhibits focusing on architecture, craftsmanship, agriculture, and social history. The museum also includes animals and agricultural landscapes to create a realistic depiction of traditional rural life. Interactive displays and demonstrations—like blacksmithing, weaving, and seasonal festivals—provide visitors with hands-on experiences.
