Alpabzug
An “Alpabzug” is a traditional practice in the Valais (Switzerland), where cows are taken up to the mountains (the Alps) for the summer to graze. At the end of the summer, they are brought back down to the valley, and this event is celebrated. The cows are often decorated with flowers, bells, and ribbons as a way to honor them for their time in the mountains. It’s a festive occasion with music, dancing, and a sense of community. As for the picture, it shows that my grandma’s cow was crowned as the “Alpkönigin” (Alpine Queen). This is a special title given to a cow that is considered the most beautiful or important in the herd.
