Keeping the sauna elf content

Sauna is an essential part of Finnish culture. Going to the sauna on Christmas is also an important part of the celebration for many families (many people and families have their own sauna). One of the more peculiar and old pieces of folklore is the sauna elf. It’s a mythical spirit or creature that resides in each sauna, responsible for ensuring a peaceful bathing experience for everyone. On Christmas Eve, it is customary to leave some food and treats—perhaps even some beer—for the sauna elf to keep it happy. That’s what we always did in my family when I was a kid. This year, I will continue the tradition in the spirit of my own sauna.
