Cornish pasties

We enjoy walking around our local beaches, and eating a beautiful Cornish pasty. Cornish pasties are a savory pastry which can be a crunchy flaky or buttery pastry, with a thick crust on one side, and meat and vegetables inside. Traditionally a pasty used to have a sweet filling at the bottom. Miners used this to know which end to eat first. The crust on a pasty is essentially a handle, this was used by the miners to not contaminate their food with their hands. They then threw the crust down the mines for the lost souls who lost their lives mining in such dangerous conditions. Although, for me, the crust of the pasty is the best part! Yum!
