Jean-Bonsommes (Saint-Nicolas)

On December 6th in the East of France we celebrate Saint-Nicolas. He comes to visit children who were well-behaved this year, and gives them chocolate/oranges/sweets...If the children were ill-mannered, then Père Fouettard comes (with a whip) and gives them charcoal. On this day, we eat people-shaped brioches, usually with chocolate chips. It used to be a religious celebration. People dressed as Saint-Nicolas and Père Fouettard come to school and ask if everyone was good this year !
