Street Roots
Street Roots is a non-profit in Portland, Oregon, committed to providing income opportunities for unhoused people through its weekly newspaper, sold by people who are unhoused or experiencing poverty. In addition to the weekly paper, which features poetry and writings from vendors, Street Roots publishes an annual zine. In October 2024, I spoke with vendors as part of an Environmental Studies course. Admittedly, I was unfamiliar with Street Roots until the course, but the organization has been etched in my mind since. Their mission statement and values of justice, equity, dignity, and solidarity are evident in their work. Street Roots captures the soul of Portland and cannot be missed when exploring this city.
