Billabong Sanctuary (Magpie Geese - Anseranas semipalmata)

Billabong Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary in Nome QLD. I visit this place regularly to birdwatch. Magpie Geese (Anseranas semipalmata) can be found roaming around here, and are known to be protective of their babies in breeding season (and outside breeding season they get cheeky towards the tourists and try to steal food!). They are known as "living fossil" and are the only extant members of the Anseranatidae family, (all other geese are Anatidae). Truly very unique and interesting birds, that do have a prehistoric dodo look to them. The honking sounds they make are also very funny to listen to!
