Maslenitsa, ancient Slavic holiday
Maslenitsa is an ancient Slavic holiday that came from pagan culture and survived after the adoption of Christianity in Rus'.Historians still argue about the origin of the holiday and the meaning of its rituals.During the week, winter is bid farewell and spring is joyfully welcomed.In 2025, Maslenitsa is celebrated from February 24 to March 2. The first three days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) are called Narrow Maslenitsa (February 24, 25 and 26). The remaining days of the Maslenitsa week - from Thursday to Sunday, that is, February 27, 28 and March 1, 2 - Wide Maslenitsa. The main festivities and the culmination of the holiday fall on the last day - March 2.The traditional dish of Maslenitsa is pancakes. Initially, they were prepared as a ritual dish for a wake, in our time they began to be baked for Maslenitsa as a symbol of the sun.
