Aurora Borealis

The beautiful aurora borealis (Northern Lights) can be seen year round where I live, but is especially spectacular in the deep darkness of the winter months. Green light is caused by atomic oxygen being excited by the electromagnetic radiation, whereas blue/ violet light is caused by molecular nitrogen.
