Festival of Lights (Fête des Lumieres)

La Fête des Lumières (The Festival of Lights) is a really special event that takes place every December in Lyon, France. It started as a local tradition back in the 1800s, when people lit candles in their windows to honor the Virgin Mary on December 8. Over time, it evolved into a huge celebration that combines history, art, and community.Today, the city transforms for four nights into an incredible outdoor art gallery, with light shows and installations projected onto buildings, streets, parks, and landmarks. Artists from around the world create these displays, ranging from fun and playful to meaningful and thought-provoking.Millions of people come to Lyon for the event. The atmosphere is magical — the streets are filled with glowing colors, music, and people just enjoying the night. Locals still light small candles (we call them lumignons) on their windowsills, keeping the original tradition alive. It’s completely free to attend, and the whole city takes part. If you ever get the chance to see it, it’s definitely one of the most beautiful and unique festivals in Europe.
