Black-Eyed Peas and Collard Greens for Good Luck!

In the American South, eating black-eyed peas and collard greens on New Year's Day has been associated with bringing good luck to the one who consumes them. The black-eyed peas were long thought of as having mystical powers to bring good luck, and the collard greens are said to bring financial prosperity because they are green like money. When the black-eyed peas are added to meat and rice it is usually called Hoppin' John.
