Lyon, Festival of lights (Dec 8th)
Every year on December 8th, the city of Lyon, France, celebrates the Festival of Lights (Fête des Lumières). This tradition has a deep Christian origin. It began centuries ago when the people of Lyon believed the Virgin Mary had protected the city from the plague. To thank her, the citizens placed candles in their windows and illuminated the streets with lights. Over time, this became an annual celebration of gratitude, unity, and hope.Today, the festival has grown into a large public event, with spectacular light shows and artistic installations all over the city. While it has become more commercial in recent years, I still love the original meaning – a moment to bring light into the darkness, to remember history, and to share warmth with others.
