Theofania Celebration Greece

Theofania is an annual Greek religious celebration that is held a week after the new years day and it's connected to Christianity since it's beginning ( Christ's baptism) .This day is the closure of the Christmas days celebrations. Kids wake up early and go from house to house to sing the Theofania carols. The main theme of the carols lyrics is the wish of good luck to the owners of each house and to have a good productive new year. People also tell the old folk story of how little troll demons cut the life tree, that makes us stay on the surface of the earth and lies beneath it. The trolls do it all year trying to destroy the people above it but they never make it . And Theofania is the day that they finally go away. People also go to the church to get Holly water and with a basil stick we rinse some drops to every room in the house for good luck Another important part of the day is that in almost every harbor, a priest comes and drops a wooden cross in the water to make the water holy for the new year. A few participants ,mostly men, dive into the water to catch it and whoever takes it first is granted a blessing from the priest to have good blessed year . It's a very highly anticipated event that takes place every year. I think it's really special because we also get to celebrate again after the new year's eve day has passed by.
