Divali Festival

In Trinidad, Divali is a vibrant, nationwide Festival of Lights, celebrated as a national holiday to mark the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Celebrations involve deep-cleaning homes, lighting hundreds of deyas (oil lamps) in elaborate displays on bamboo, performing prayers and pujas, feasting on traditional sweets, and wearing new clothes. The festival is a major cultural event for the country's Hindu community, who brought the tradition from India as indentured laborers.
