Visiting the Past

People in the UK, and I'm sure around the world, are often drawn to ancient and old places. As an archaeologist, I often find myself visiting ruins and remnants of my ancestors homes, places of worship, schools and social centres. If you ever find yourself in the UK, please be sure to visit some of these magical places. The first photo of this post shows Whitby Abbey on the coast of North Yorkshire. The Abbey is known for having such a mystical and gothic ambience, it even inspired Bram Stoker in his writing of 'Dracula'. The Abbey ruins are the first thing that the vampire Dracula sees when he lands in England, and it forms the backdrop of his first hunt on English soil. The second photo shows Slains Castle in Aberdeen, Scotland. This famous ruin is also linked to Bram Stoker - he was clearly as drawn to these ruined and mysterious places as much as we are today! Slains Castle was the inspiration to Dracula's fictional castle in Transylvania. Both of these locations are said to be haunted, and have also inspired many a ghost story. Would you dare to visit these places of the past?
