Sarawak Laksa — A Kuching Staple

One of the most comforting parts of life in Kuching is Sarawak Laksa, a beloved local dish that many of us consider a taste of home. Unlike the laksa in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak Laksa has a lighter broth made from sambal belacan, coconut milk, and aromatic spices. It’s warming, flavorful, and feels like a hug in a bowl. For many families here, Sarawak Laksa is a weekend ritual. People wake up early to visit their favorite laksa stall — every local has a ‘the best one’ in their opinion. It’s usually served with rice vermicelli, shredded chicken, prawns, bean sprouts, and a squeeze of lime. The smell of the broth alone is enough to make you hungry. What I love most is how this dish brings people together: friends catching up in kopitiams, families having breakfast after morning errands, and sometimes tourists taking their very first sip with excitement. It’s a simple but deeply cultural part of life in Kuching.I’ve included photos of a bowl of Sarawak Laksa from my favorite place, capturing the colors and warmth that make it special.
