Cossack culture

Cossack culture is deeply connected to the land, horses, and strong community traditions. Don Cossacks have long been known for their horsemanship and their close relationship with the wide steppe. Many families still keep elements of this heritage alive, whether through riding, traditional songs, or the clothing passed down through generations. One of the most recognizable parts of Cossack culture is the cherkeska, a long coat with rows of gazyr pockets on the chest, often worn together with a papakha, a tall fur hat. These garments are still used today during festivals, ceremonies, and family celebrations.Cossack gatherings often include polyphonic singing, where voices blend in powerful harmonies that echo through the steppe. Traditional dishes like kulesh, a hearty millet porridge cooked outdoors, and ukha, a clear fish soup, are still enjoyed at holidays and communal events.Although modern life has changed many things, the spirit of the Cossacks, respect for nature, loyalty to family, and pride in heritage, continues to be an important part of daily life for many people from the Don region.
