Sunday Kos (South African Tradition)

Sunday kos is a special meal in South Africa where families come together to eat, relax, and spend time with each other. It usually happens on Sundays after church or in the afternoon, and it’s one of the most loved traditions.A popular part of Sunday kos is “seven colours.” This means your plate must be full of different foods and colours — like rice, meat, gravy, carrots, pumpkin, cabbage, beetroot, and salads. The more colours, the better! It shows effort, love, and that the food is going to be serious And the funny part? You’re not allowed to take “small” portions If your plate isn’t full, someone (especially moms or grandmothers) will say: “Is that all you’re eating?” and before you know it, your plate is overloaded. Also, after eating… everyone suddenly becomes sleepy The house goes quiet because people are either napping or too full to move.Even though Sunday kos is a shared tradition, the food differs from culture to culture. Some families make roast and potatoes, others cook stews and rice, and some prepare curry or traditional dishes.
