New Year festival

Sri Lankan Avurudu (Sinhala & Tamil New Year Traditions)In Sri Lanka, one of the biggest cultural celebrations is the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, also called “Avurudu”. It is usually celebrated in April, when the sun moves from Pisces to Aries. This festival is not only a holiday, but also a time for family unity, traditions, and cultural activities.A special part of Avurudu is the “nonagathaya”, which means the neutral time. During this time people stop work, avoid arguments, and focus on peaceful activities like cleaning the house, going to the temple, and spending time with family. Before the New Year begins, we clean our homes and decorate them. At the correct lucky time (called Nekath), we light an oil lamp. This lamp is important because it symbolizes good luck, peace, and prosperity for the new year. One of the most important foods we make is Kiribath (milk rice). It is cooked with coconut milk and served with spicy onion sambol or sweet jaggery. We also prepare many traditional sweets called kavili, such as:KokisAluwaAasmiMun KevumKonda KevumIn many homes, we create a beautiful Avurudu table with all these foods. Everyone wears new clothes, often traditional Sri Lankan outfits.Another fun part of Avurudu is playing traditional village games, especially with family and neighbors. Some common games are:Kana Mutti (breaking clay pots)Sack raceTug of warPillow fightLime and spoon raceThese games make the festival exciting, and they bring people together.Avurudu is special to Sri Lanka because it is not only about celebration, but also about respect, kindness, and starting fresh. Children receive gifts or money, and elders are respected through traditional greetings and rituals. For me, Avurudu feels like the happiest time of the year because my family gathers together, we eat delicious traditional foods, and we enjoy our Sri Lankan culture proudly.
