Dover Castle

Dover Castle, the fortress on the cliffs. A fortification has existed here since roughly 800 BC and commands the Strait of Dover, a position of strategic importance throughout history. The current Keep dates from the period of Henry II and was built between 1179–89. At one point, it was the most advanced castle design in Europe. The site has stood firm through sieges, civil war, right through to WWII when it was a centre of operations and deep tunnels were created.
