Costa Rican Bullfighting (Toros a la tica)

Around the month of December in the Zapote, or San Antonio area, Costa Rican bullfighting is hosted and televised for everyone to see. Unlike other bullfighting the Costa Rican version is a comical non lethal chase. Where you see a crowd of people do their best to avoid getting hit by the bull. Little games are often played where people are made to stand on top of barrels lined up like bowling pins for the bull to crash into, sometimes two bulls are thrown into the arena to spice things up. When a bull’s time is up cowboys riding on horseback come out to lasso the bull out of the arena. At one point during the night spectators are allowed to jump in because they'll throw out younger smaller bull. Inside the arena surrounded by strangers of all ages and shapes and sizes, you and everyone else feel an unmatched primal rush to run as fast as you can at the sight of a bull running in your general direction. If you happen to be traveling around this time of year I most definitely recommend you to come watch one of these (and to hop in the arena too if possible!) It is an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity.!!
