Christmas in Australia ️🇦🇺

Christmas in Australia is a little different from the snowy Christmas you often see in movies! Because December is summer here, Christmas Day can be very hot. Where I live in Cairns, in tropical North Queensland, it is also our wet season, so Christmas can mean sunshine, heat, humidity and sometimes a tropical downpour! ️️We still have all the familiar Christmas traditions. We decorate the Christmas tree, put up lights, exchange presents, listen to Christmas music and spend the day with family. It is always a little funny seeing snowflakes, snowmen and winter decorations everywhere when it can be over 30°C outside! We also have some very Australian Christmas songs. Instead of everything being about snow and sleighs, some songs give Christmas an Aussie twist. There’s “Six White Boomers,” where Santa travels around Australia with kangaroos instead of reindeer, and “Aussie Jingle Bells,” which turns the traditional song into a very Australian summer Christmas. 🇦🇺 We still listen to all the usual Christmas classics too!Christmas food varies between families. You might find ham, roast meats, seafood, salads, cold meats or a BBQ on the table. Desserts such as pavlova, trifle, Christmas pudding and fruit mince pies are also popular. With the Australian summer heat, cold food can be very welcome! Some Australians spend Christmas Day swimming in the pool, at the beach or relaxing outside, while others stay inside enjoying the air conditioning! For me, Christmas is really about spending time with family, exchanging presents, eating lots of good food and enjoying the day together.I think that is what makes an Australian Christmas so unique. We have Christmas trees, Santa and songs about snow, but we celebrate them with sunshine, summer clothes, kangaroos in our Christmas songs and tropical weather. ️🇦🇺
