Sinharaja Rainforest
Sinharaja Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka’s largest remaining primary tropical rainforest and one of the country’s most important natural ecosystems. Located mainly in the Sabaragamuwa and Southern regions, it is famous for its rich biodiversity and large number of endemic species, including many birds, plants, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians found only in Sri Lanka. The forest receives heavy rainfall and plays an important role in protecting water sources, preventing soil erosion, and maintaining the ecological balance of the region. Due to its outstanding biodiversity and ecological importance, Sinharaja was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. It is also a popular destination for nature lovers, hikers, and bird watchers, while conservation efforts are essential to protect it from threats such as illegal logging, encroachment, and poorly managed tourism.
