Gaari Geet (Ritualized Insult Songs)

In Bihar (northern state of India bordering Nepal), on occasions like marriages, the women members of bride's family sing songs as a tradition, songs are generally mocking using slurs, insults towards the groom's family or the groom, they don't even forgive the guests eating food, imagine you having time of your life eating your favourite food in a wedding and suddenly singers start singing about your portion size and everyone now has attention on you and your food.Sometimes the song is about social commentary, mocking the culture of dowry and greed. Sometimes about issue of domestic violence, female foeticide, the issues talked about could be from lighthearted issues to even about major issues.Sometimes it's about how the groom sits, walks or behaves, how weirdly someone dances. if the groom is slim jokes would be "taar bijli se patle humare piya" meaning "my husband is slimmer than an electrical wire"These programmes are extremely fun, and you can't catch a single person not enjoying or laughing but if you laugh too much the next song could be about your laughter...
