Pão por Deus
"Pão por Deus" is an ancient Portuguese tradition celebrated on the morning of All Saints' Day (November 1st), when groups of children go out to ask for offerings from door to door; while they do receive plenty of sweets, they traditionally also get chestnuts, walnuts, anise-flavored cakes, fruit, or even money, among other items. Although often compared to Halloween because it involves children asking for treats, "Pão por Deus" is distinguished by its cultural and charitable nature, lacking the concept of "trick-or-treating" or pranks.
