Wrocław's Little Dwarfs

If you ever visit Wrocław, Poland, don't be surprised if you find yourself looking down rather than up while exploring the city! Hidden along the streets, sitting on windowsills, standing outside shops and peeking around corners are hundreds of tiny bronze dwarfs. Each has its own personality, occupation and story. You might come across a dwarf reading a book, riding a motorcycle or enjoying a little nap. But these charming little figures have a rather fascinating history. During the 1980s, a Polish anti-communist movement called the Orange Alternative used humour, absurdity and images of dwarfs to protest against the communist authorities. What began as a playful form of resistance eventually became one of Wrocław's most recognisable symbols. Today, searching for dwarfs is a popular activity among locals and visitors. Some people even use special maps to track them down! What I particularly love about Wrocław is this combination of history, creativity and humour. The city has a way of turning an ordinary walk into a little adventure. And who knows? Perhaps one day you'll visit Wrocław and discover your own favourite dwarf!
