German potato salad
In Germany, potato salad can almost be a small-talk topic with political undertones: With or without mayonnaise? In many families in the south, it’s made warm with broth, vinegar, oil, and onions—it’s perfectly fine if it’s a little “soupy.” Elsewhere, it’s served cold, creamy, and with mayonnaise, sometimes with cucumbers or egg. I remember a meal we shared where two versions were on the table. Everyone was convinced that their version was the only correct one. In the end, everyone tried both—and I’m sure everyone secretly took another bite from the other bowl. What’s typical in your family: Do you tend to make a dish according to a set family recipe at family gatherings, or do you also have passionate discussions about the “right” way to prepare it?
