Zhama folk woodblock printing
Zhama is a traditional folk woodblock-printing art from Yunnan, southwestern China, especially associated with the Bai ethnic community in Dali, my hometown. Traditionally, Zhama prints were used in folk rituals and prayers for good fortune, peace, health, and protection. Each print features distinctive patterns and symbols, carved into wooden blocks and transferred onto paper by hand. What I find fascinating about Zhama is how it combines art, folk beliefs, and people's hopes for a better life. To me, it is more than an old printing technique — it is a little window into the history and everyday culture of my hometown. I wanted to share this beautiful tradition with people from other parts of the world, so they can discover a different side of Chinese culture beyond the usual things they might know about China.
