Southern American Cakes
We love big, layered Southern cakes in my family! My great grandmother, the first generation born free from slavery, worked at a fancy hotel as a baker, and every Easter, she would bake a cake in every bright color you can imagine. My aunt baked elaborate cakes every holiday, and now it’s my turn! For holidays, gatherings, and celebrations, I bake a cake (often requested by my mother). Southern cakes are unique, because they combine an assortment of flavors, can have towering layers, sport detailed decorations, and are incredibly laborious to make (generally around 10 hrs). Everything is from scratch (no shortcuts!), but everyone will tell you the time and effort was worth it, even though the baker may not agree...
